Today’s Sketch(es): August 2, 2016
Had a burning urge to paint… something… so I decided it was time to break out the acrylic paints and canvases.
I had no idea what exactly I wanted to paint, so I figured I’d go with abstract colour work. After all, the nice thing about acrylics is that when they’re dry, if I don’t like them, I can always use them as underpaintings/backgrounds for something else and paint over them.
Close-ups of the 8 10×10″ pieces (please excuse the crappy cell phone pics):
It was a bit weird for me doing wholy non-objective work; I do do a lot of abstraction, but it’s usually symbolic or it’s simplification or whatever of an actual object as opposed to “I dunno, I think I should grab some paints and canvases and see what comes out” as an expressive process.
I do like the series, though, even if I can’t articulate why other than “look at the pretty colours” and there’s a nice cyclical pattern with the first, fourth, and eighth canvases coming out very dark.
I kinda know what particular anxiety that related to on that day, but it’s nothing I care to post about online. It’ll sort itself out, probably.
Side note/post-script: these were done at my jam space rather than at home. At the end, I headed down the hall to the sink by the art studios end of the building so I could wash out my brush without wrecking the kitchenette or bathroom sinks, and in the process got chatting with one of the other denizens of the jam space complex, who asked if I would let her see the works, I said sure, so we headed back to the studio and she had a look and was quite impressed with them, particularly their “depth.”
So, I guess they’re communicating something successfully, even if I’m no more clear on what specifically that was now than I was when the urge to sit down and make them set in.
